Meet T.C. Smith
Last Wednesday morning I was able to finally meet with the mentor, Samiha Khanna, and the student, T.C. Smith, during their weekly time spent together. It was really fun getting to watch them interact and see how just meeting and talking with a student for a few minutes every week can make a big difference in that student's life.
T.C. just turned 18 years old and has a strong interest in writing poetry. She said that at one point before enrolling at the Durham Performance Learning Center she had considered dropping out of high school, but it was several conversations she had with her grandmother that convinced her to stay in school. This began to confirm in my mind my earlier theory that adults investing their time in youth can help curb the dropout rate.
This week is the DPLC's spring break, so I won't be able to get more photographs of the two of them together until next week. I am hoping to take some pictures of T.C. outside of school but am having some difficulty getting in touch with her mother and time is winding down. I will be meeting with Khanna at her home on Friday afternoon to take some more photographs of her life, which should help.
I also need to figure out how to use Audacity in the very near future. This semester is coming to a close so quickly.
Until next week.
