DISSATISFACTION  WITHIN THE NASAKA BORDER SECURITY FORCES : A NA-SA-KA MAJOR'S CONFISCATION OF PRIVATE SHRIMP FARMS FOR OWN BENEFIT REPORTED TO WESTERN COMMAND

Maungdaw, 22th December 01:
A major of the Nasaka border security forces confiscated private shrimp farms at Maungdaw township in the western part of Myanmar for personal gains,   the Nasaka troops in the area reported to their authority, our correspondent learned from one of the dissatisfied Nasaka troops.
The Nasaka major named San Aung, commander of Nasaka Area No. 1, confiscated privately owned twenty-one acres of shrimp farm of Udaung village tract under Maungdaw township for his personal gains without reporting the matter to the higher authority.  For some years he has kept the entire affair secret and it is estimated that, he has had earned a few million Myanmar kyat in the meantime. The Nasaka troops under the command of the said major who have been bypassed, reported the incidence to the Headquarters of the border security forces situated at Kyi-gan-braung, Maungdaw after they have got confirmed reports of the confiscation.   Later, on 27th October this year, the matter was also brought to the attention of the Western Command.
The illegal confiscation has recently been put under scrutiny of the Western Command while no action has yet been taken.   The entire matter was so far kept away from the knowledge of the Nasaka authority by the collaboration of the village leaders and others in the township administration.
Shrimp cultivation sector has become the most lucrative foreign-currency earner in which shadowy dealings are common, and the Myanmar military have continually been confiscating shrimp farms from the private owners since 1990 in Rakhine State with virtual impunity, commented a manager of a multi-national fisheries company in Rakhine State to our correspondent.  #
