Hunger Strike at Bandarban Jail ends

Some 522 nationals of Myanmar and Thailand at Bandarban prison have ended their hunger strike on condition that they will be sent home within 15 days and given adequate food.

DIG (prison) Abdus Salam, Deputy Commissioner DK Chowdhury and Police Super Abdul Bari Mia negotiated and broke their hunger strike Saturday night with bread and banana. They began the hunger strike on Friday.

Official said that foreign nationals are in jail although their prison terms ended long ago. They include 473 from Myanmar and 79 from Thailand, thrown into jail for pirating in the sea or illegally trespassing into Bangladesh.

They are in Jail as a negotiations to take them back is unnecessarily lingered by their government, jail officials said.

They said these prisoners, mostly trained in marshal art, often posed threat to other inmates of the jail and the jail authorities as well. " In fact, we want to get rid of them immediately," said an official.#
