Rohingya refugees from Burma clash with Bangladeshi Police
Cox’s Bazaar, 15 Sep. 02: According to the local press, a group of Rohingya refugees unwilling to be repatriated to Burma’s Arakan State sheltered at Nayapara Refugee Camp in the southeastern district of Bangladesh locked in a sporadic clash with on-duty police and paramilitary Ansar forces from the afternoon till deep of the night on Friday last.
At least 20 Rohingya refugees and four members of the law enforcement agencies were wounded in the aftermath, reported the Ittefaq, a vernacular daily. A total of five Rohingyas including a woman have been arrested in connection with the agitation.
Police sources and witnesses said the clash broke out when the police in an attempt to foil the agitation programme for refusing to be repatriated home fired blank shots to disperse the crowd. Till there were periodic agitations between the two groups.
Our correspondent from Cox’s Bazar added that, agitation by a group of refugees a few years ago stalled the repatriation process for about one and a half years. Additional police forces have been deployed to tackle the volatile situation in the camp. #
