Bangladesh  Myanmar Friendship Society: just get-together and dinner?

Dhaka, 5th October 02:  The Bangladesh  Myanmar Friendship Society held an inaugural get-together and dinner on 1st October 02 in a hotel in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, according to the local press.

Society President Retired Major General Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, Bir Protik, delivered the welcome address.  The speakers on the occasion including Bangladesh Foreign Minister Morshed Khan, Commerce Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Reaz Rahman, State Minister for Energy A K M Mosharraf Hossain and Myanmar Ambassador U Ohn Thwin, underscored the enhancement of cooperation on various aspects including trade and commerce.

Present on the occasion were diplomats, government officials, business leaders, academicians and media personalities.  The society was launched in May this year as a non-political and not-for-profit organization.

It may be worth mentioning here that according to the local press, Bangladesh is showing growing interest in transmitting the natural gas from Burma to India. Besides, the country also needs more gas for its growing demand and declining supply in near future at home.

Recently Mr H Dili, Deputy Managing Director of the Daewoo International of South Korea, told the Myanmar Times that, his company has discovered a reserve of between 13.4 to 47.3 trillion cubic feet of gas reserve in the A1 gas field offshore Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine (Arakan) State, the western member of Burma.

The reserve is clearly much more than that of the 6.7 tcf gas reserves at Martaban Sea discovered by the French Total Co. and US Unocal Co. and the 3.2 tcf at Tennessarim Division of Burma discovered by the UK based Premiere Co. combined. #
