Bangladesh Premier to visit Rangoon

Dhaka, 22 February 2003The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia is scheduled to visit Rangoon on a two day tour on the 19th March.  She is expected to open a four-day long trade fair of goods from Bangladesh, reports a Bengali daily in Dhaka today.

According to sources in the Ministry of Trade and Commerce she is also anticipated to discuss bilateral issues shared between the two neighbouring countries.  Bangladesh held a one-country trade fair in Rangoon last year, too.  A group of trade delegates led by the Commerce Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury represented Bangladesh in the festival.

This year’s fair has been arranged by taking into consideration of the necessity to continue holding of such festivals in the face of increased demands for goods from Bangladesh in the Burmese market through the Export Promotion Bureau.  The fair is scheduled to take place between March 20th and 24th.

The Ministry of Trade and Commerce has already issued directives to the Vice Chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau to make arrangements for the success of the trade fair.  Meanwhile, the Bureau has taken up necessary preparations to ensure the participation of at least one hundred stalls of different trade bodies in the fair.

Sources in the bureau confirmed that a delegation of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) led by its Chairman Yusuf Abdullah Harun and the Commerce Minister will accompany the prime minister to attend the opening ceremony.   The business community in Bangladesh hold high hopes regarding the overall success of the visit and trade fair, the sources said.  #
