Burmese junta’s attempts to raise organized campaign of lies
Dhaka, 13th June 03: Seventeen members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) including the bodyguard of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Tun Zaw Zaw, the popular leader of Burmese Opposition have been reportedly tortured and interrogated at Khanti Prison, in Sagaing Division in northern part of Burma.
The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) in an emergency press release (1/2003) today said that the seventeen NLD members have been brutally tortured for forcing them to confess that the Depayin Massacre on 30th May was a confrontation between the pro- and anti- Aung San Suu Kyi groups, and that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was abusing democracy, and the NLD instigated the violence that day. Phado Mansha, the General Secretary of NCUB quoting sources in the hospital said in the press release that, the SPDC junta was trying to raise an organized campaign of lies to the world by distorting the facts of what happened at Dapeyin that day.
Quoting the district hospital sources that are attending to them he also said that the physical condition of the seventeen youths including the bodyguard of Suu Kyi was also quickly deteriorating due to the wound they received and physical torture by the Burmese military intelligence personnel. Besides all of them have been kept incommunicado since their arrest on 30th May.
Besides the NCUB expressed high concern at the disappearance of a large number of people since that incident who have never returned home till now.
The NCUB is the umbrella organization of a number of Burmese opposition groups including the NCGUB (National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma), the Democratic Alliance of Burma (DAB), the National League for Democracy (Liberated Area), and the National Democratic Front (NDF). #
