Arakanese Orchids on the verge of extinction

 

 

Akyab, April 26:  Orchids in the wilderness of Arakan, a western state in Burma are threatened with extinction due to their high demand from exporters to China.

 

One viz of orchid costs 8,000 kyats in Akyab, and a ton would attract US $ 4000 dollar in China-Burma border.

 

An Orchid trader said that Chinese believe in the medicinal qualities of the orchid.  They use it in traditional medicine and use it for making orchid tea.

 

A botanist said there are about 841 Orchid species in Burma

 

The Pa Zon Orchid is threatened with extinction due to its massive exportation from the Chin Hills to China, said the botanist. #
