Donations arriving for cyclone victims in Arakan

Akyab, June 12:
The Chinese Red Cross Society (CRCS) donated US dollar 20,000 in cash for the victims of the cyclone in Arakan state two weeks ago, reported The New Light of Myanmar on 9 June.

The cash donation was delivered to Dr Tun Sein, Acting President of the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) by Mr Yu Boren, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Burma.

The cyclone hit the Arakan coast on 19 May and left over 300 people dead and more than 20,000 people homeless, as the government disclosed ten days after the incident.

Prime Minister Khin Nyunt visited the cyclone-affected area on 8 June and Kyat 390 million was donated by the group of well-wishers who accompanied the Prime Minister, to be distributed among the cyclone victims, said the sources.

Many social welfare organizations also came forward to help the victims with cash donations, clothes, books, stationeries and medicine, worth kyat 2 million, on 9 June. The organizations are the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation (MWAF) and the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (MMCWA), led by Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Prime Minister Khin Nyunt.

Though there had been  many news published in newspapers  about the arrival of huge amounts of donations, in cash and kind for the victims of natural disasters in the past, these were reported to have been misappropriated by the local authority, while only 25% of the aids reached the victims, said local people.
