Forced Labour in Arakan Capital Increases Agony

Akyab, July 6: The existence of forced labour in Akyab, the capital city of Arakan, has been reported by city residents over the telephone.

According to our informants, every Saturday, the people of Akyab have to work to clean the streets and drainage from every house.

In default, people are fined kyat 500 per house. Most of the city’s dwellers have to work unwillingly for fear of the fine.

Boys and girls, irrespective of age, have to do the forced labour work.

Government officials also have to participate every Saturday in cleaning work around their office premises. Failure to work results in salary cuts.#
