Arakan State
NLD general secretary passes away

Akyab, July 29: Arakan State NLD general secretary, U Tha Kyaw, died in a clinic in Rangoon on 25 July.

He had previously been moved, for better treatment, from his residence of Akyab to the Shwe Gondin specialist clinic in Rangoon, however his health quickly deteriorated there.

U Tha Kyaw was a prominent political leader of Arakan, as well as a former Rangoon University student leader. While at the university, he held office as the president of Takatha (Rangoon University Student Union), the famous studentís organization that led the independent movement of Burma under the British rule.

He was expelled, for life, from the university while he was leading the October 1953 students movement in Rangoon, said his relative.

He had spent his life working in politics and had been jailed several times by Burmese authorities.

According to an Akyab source, he was the only person in Akyab who bravely worked for several Burmese news agencies, including radio broadcasting services that reported against the local intelligent unit order; working with foreign radio services was strictly prohibited by government authorities.

He also served, for at least 10 years, as a general secretary of Arakan State's NLD.

U Tha Kyaw was 76 years old and is survived by two sons, one daughter as well as his wife, Ma Thu Zar Aye. #
