Rohingya-Rakhine Clash in Arakan State

 

Kyauk Pru, January 28: A Rohingya-Rakhine clash broke out in a town named Kyauk Pru of Arakan State on January 20, 2005, leaving the some injured from both sides, said a habitant of Kyauk Pru on condition of anonymity.

 

Before the clash, an accident was occurred when a Rohingya driver of bullock cart accidentally knocked down a rickshaw while crossing the road injuring a Buddhist monk of the rickshaw and it was partly damaged, he further added.

 

For the accident, the bullock driver apologized to the Buddhist monk and also gave   compensation to the owner of the rickshaw.

 

As the news spread, some local Rakhine youths, from nearby Rakhine Pike Sik village got angry and went on the rampage to the Rohingya Pike Sik village and damage some houses. None was dead but some people, from both sides were injured.

 

However, the clash was calm down after reached a compromise with both sides of local leaders.

 

But, a tense situation is prevailing in the town. Additional police have been deployed at different strategic points.

 

According to Narinjara and RFA, at least 3 people were dead in the clash between Rakhines and Rohingyas.

 

In Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships of Arakan state, there is no news about the clash of Kyauk Pru town, said a man, who recently came to Bangladesh. ##
