Asean can do more  for Myanmar, says workshop speaker
THE executive director of the Malaysian Strategic Research Centre has urged Asean countries to provide more assistance to Myanmar. Addressing a seminar held as part of a regional security workshop, Mr Abdul Razak Baginda said some Asean countries could do more to engage with Myanmar. Closer engagement was in the interests of the Asean "family" he told seminar participants, who included personnel from government organisations. Mr Abdul Razak was a member of a delegation headed by the Malaysian Defence Minister, Najib Razak, which travelled to Yangon at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Military Affairs and Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla. At another workshop session, Mr Abdul Razak offered advice on dealing with the Western media. "The bottom line of the Western media is to make money," he said. "They will write what the people want to hear," said Mr Abdul Razak, who said he had often been quoted out of context by the Western media. His advice was to continue to engage with the Western media, but be neither antagonistic nor friendly.

Secretary-1 to meet Thaksin in Bangkok

SECRETARY 1 of the State Peace and Development Council, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, travels to Thailand this week for a visit which comes amid a further strengthening of bilateral relations. Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt is making the three-day visit beginning Monday as a guest of Defence Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh. While in Bangkok he will hold talks with Prime Minister Thaksin Shi-nawatra. "It’s likely that discussions will cover the development of military ties between Thailand and Myanmar and border trade," Thai foreign ministry spokesman Norachit Singhaseni said last week.  Bilateral relations were affected by a border dispute last February but improved an inaugural visit to Myanmar by Thaksin last June. Chavalit, who has close ties with the Myanmar government, declared in July after a visit to Yangon that relations had been normalized. On Tuesday, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt will be granted an audience with Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej at his seaside palace in Hua Hin, south of Bangkok.  Secretary 1 will also meet Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai during the trip. – AFP

By Win Lwin Aung

MYANMAR has high hopes for gold medals in more than 10 sports at the 21st SEA Games which open today in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Sports Ministry officials told the Myanmar Times that the national team has a strong chance of gold medal performances in swimming, rowing, boxing, women’s weight-lifting, wushu, archery, sepak takraw, taekwondo, volleyball, women’s soccer and shooting. The Myanmar football team is also expected to perform well. The team’s chief coach, David Booth, said the team would make every effort to realise the expectations of its millions of fans. "We are going to try our best to defeat our rivals and win," Mr Booth said. "Every player is in peak condition," he said. The Myanmar football team was knocked out in the group matches at previous SEA Games. Myanmar has sent more than 400 athletes, coaches and managers to the bi-annual Games, which are played over two weeks. Brunei hosted the previous SEA Games.
