THE United Nations special envoy to Myanmar, Mr Razali Ismail, left Yangon last Tuesday following a visit that included meetings with senior government leaders and the secretary-general of the National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

A government statement issued after Mr Razali’s departure said he had expressed his deepest appreciation at being able to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, with whom he held talks a few hours before leaving the country after a four-day visit. [FullStory]

 
 
THE Association of the Southeast Asian Nations will uphold its policy of not interfering in members’ domestic affairs when issues involving Myanmar are raised at a meeting in Phnom Penh this week, the Asean secretary-general, Mr Ong Keng Yong, said last week. Mr Ong was speaking ahead of the annual meeting of Asean foreign ministers, due to begin in the Cambodian capital on June 16. “We will not allow discussions among our own family members to be translated into a public position (perception),” Mr Ong said in an interview with Myanmar Times in Yangon last Wednesday.
