THE Swiss government has appointed an honorary consul to represent its interests in Myanmar.

The honorary consul, U Tin Win, the director of Swiss-owned Diethelm Travel, said he was “thrilled” by the appointment.

“As the representative of Switzerland and a citizen of Myanmar, I will try my best to promote bilateral relations,” he said.


 
THE government’s decision to reconvene the National Convention to draft a new constitution was welcomed by Myanmar’s partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at the annual meeting of its foreign ministers last week.
 
NARCOTICS valued by the government at US$247 million were destroyed at a ceremony in Yangon on June 26 to mark the United Nations day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

ONSHORE crude oil production will increase by almost double from December, a Ministry of Energy senior official said last week.U Soe Myint, Director General of the Ministry’s Energy Planning Department,said Myanmar would increase onshore crude oil production to 20,000 barrels per day (bpd).

 
A CHINESE-MYANMAR joint venture for yam production that could employ 18,000 Myanmar workers is in the preliminary stages of negotiations. The deal will involve yam cultivation in either Shan State or Mandalay, as well as a processing plant, which will be built in Mandalay.
