CHINA’S President, Mr Hu Jintao, pledged to deepen cooperation with Myanmar during talks last week with the Prime Minister, General Khin Nyunt.

Speaking at a meeting with General Khin Nyunt in Beijing on July 13, Mr Hu said China stands ready to “further expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation” with Myanmar, said a statement issued by the Chinese foreign ministry.

Mr Hu, who is also general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, expressed China’s support for Myanmar in its efforts “to maintain social stability, promote national reconciliation and expand foreign exchanges,” the statement said.

The biggest bank operating in Myanmar in terms of capital – Kanbawza Bank – now has deposits of more than K50 billion and has resumed lending since April this year, in line with Central Bank regulations, a spokesperson for the bank said this month. Kanbawza Bank resumed normal operations in February 2004.
 
THE government last week denied foreign media reports alleging that it was involved in placing a listening device in the Indonesian embassy in Yangon.A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 12 said the allegations were made to discredit Myanmar and to undermine relations between Yangon and Jakarta.
 
     
AN INTERNATIONAL environmental organisation has suggested that the government enlarge a national park in Tanintharyi Division to help protect a number of endangered birds, including Gurney’s Pitta. The suggestion to add another 50,000 hectares to the Lenya National Park in the south of the division has been made by Birdlife International, a global partnership of conservation groups.

THE Minister of Immigration and Population, Major General Sein Htwa, highlighted measures taken by the government to improve the quality of women’s lives at a ceremony to mark World Population Day, which falls on July 11.

The state-run China Daily reported on July 5 that training was being provided to police from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam as part of efforts to expand security cooperation with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Ten police officers from Cambodia completed the course in late July, becoming the first from an ASEAN member to receive training in China.

He said the area used to grow tea had risen from 154,000 acres in 1995-96 to 188,000 acres in 2003-2004 and production had increased from 32.5 million viss of green tea leaves to 45.5 million viss during the same period. A viss is 3.6 pounds.

MEMBERS of an American non-government organisation, Teachers Across Borders, have for the first time presented a special education program in Myanmar.The program, involving seven members of Teachers Across Borders, was presented at the University of Education in Yangon from July 5 to 17.

 
 

CONSTRUCTION workers in Myanmar are not being effectively protected from accidents, claim workers surveyed by the Myanmar Times.The government has laws in place that provide for the safety of workers, but they are not being effectively followed due to a lack of knowledge about the rules, they said.

 

AS the United States renewed economic sanctions on July 7, Myanmar’s garment industry is more stable than when the stricter sanctions were first introduced at the end of August last year, industry sources told Myanmar Times last week.
