THE annual five-day relay of the Union Flag throughout Yangon Division was inaugurated by the City Mayor, Brigadier-General Aung Thein Lin, on February 8 ahead of celebrations marking Union Day on February 12.The ceremony to mark the start of the relay was held at the City Hall, where the flag is kept.The Union Flag will travel through 45 townships before arriving at People’s Square on Pyay Road for a Union Day ceremony, at which a message from the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Senior General Than Shwe, will be read out.

 
A MASTER plan to develop long-term strategies for developing tourism in the Greater Mekong Sub-region will be presented to its six member countries by the end of May, it was announced in Yangon last week.
 
The committee that drafted the law was comprised of representatives from the ministry and other government departments, he said. The law would ensure that the rights of trafficked victims were protected and that traffickers received the maximum penalty, Police Lieutenant-Colonel Rallyan Mone said. INLAND Water Transport, under the Ministry of Transport, launched two passenger craft and a container boat this month, bringing the total number of vessels in its fleet to 412.The manager of IWT, U Myo Myint, said the passenger boats included the 100-foot-long Shwepyithit, which will carry tourists on the Ayeyarwaddy River between Mandalay and Nyaung Oo and Bagan.

The conservation of the Myanmar roofed turtle (Kachuga trivittata), an indigenous species, was essential to help preserve the nation’s natural heritage, said U Win Ko Ko, a herpetologist with the New York-based WCS and a member of the survey team. The two-week survey is being conducted along a 150-kilometre stretch of the river between Hkamti and Homalin, in Sagaing Division.

 

THE Malaysian government has invited Myanmar timber and wood products companies to participate in the Malaysia Furniture Export Exhibition 2005, to be held in Kuala Lumpur from March 3 to 7.

THE Landmark Construction and Engineering Company, and the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development this month began work on a joint housing project in Hlaing Tharyar township in the suburbs of Yangon.

 

ON the night of February 6, to celebrate the Chinese new year, the Trees, led by more than 20 different singers performed at the Golden Dragon Hall Lion City Restaurant in Hlaing Township.Sadly, the hall was only half filled, but those who were there were treated to a great concert.

 

Over the last couple of years, Myanmar cotton has started to overtake imported materials as the fabric of choice for those having new clothes made. Not only is cotton cool and comfortable, but it is also considerably cheaper than the synthetic blends brought in from other countries.

THE Myanmar Red Cross Society has chosen a former rector of the Defence Services Medical Institute, Dr Hla Myint, as its new president.
