INDIA’S Minister of External Affairs, Mr K. Natwar Singh, arrived in Yangon on March 24 for a three-day visit aimed at further consolidating bilateral ties.The visit, at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, U Nyan Win, was aimed at “carrying forward the ongoing high level dialogue between India and Myanmar,” said a statement issued by the Indian External Affairs Ministry on March 23.

 
STARTING with the recognition of Myanmar as the official name of the country, a powerful and compelling independent report commissioned by the European Union has called for an alternative, sweeping approach on how best to help Myanmar achieve national reconciliation, develop its economy and build a civil society.
 
SILKAIR, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will increase the frequency of its service to Yangon under a plan to expand its network capacity by 14 per cent during the next seven months, the carrier said on March 22.
 

YANGON City Development Committee says it expects to issue permits for more than 500 Thingyan pandals this year, about the same number as during the traditional new year water throwing festival in 2004.

     

GENETIC information about more than 12,000 varieties of plants has been collected by the Department of Agriculture and Irrigation since it established a seed bank in 1990, a senior official said last week.U Soe Myint, a director at the Department of Agricultural Research at Yezin in Mandalay Division, said the collection included more than 6000 varieties of rice as well as oil seed and other industrial crops.

A PLAN is underway to replace about 35 per cent of Myanmar’s table grape production with high-quality varieties to help farmers realise higher profits and to reduce dependence on foreign-grown imports, said a government horticulturist last week.

U Thet Naung, an assistant director in Mandalay of the ministry’s Department of Dry Zone Greening department in Mandalay, told Myanmar Times that the use of the stoves by the three million households in the region could reduce firewood consumption by 2.4 million tons a year.

Dr John Sale, a British scientist who works as a freelance biodiversity conservation consultant, said Myanmar researchers who focus on biodiversity-related issues can provide information that will help improve conservation plans for the country.

“Bago is an attractive tourist destination with famous pagodas, and with rich history and historical sites, so a one-day trip is not enough,” said U Kaung Htut, the assistant general manager of MTT, under the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

 

“The business situation has not changed much, with sales just so-so compared to last year,” said U Zaw Moe, the manager of sales and marketing at TMW Enterprise Limited, which is the sole distributor in Myanmar of Japan-made Sony electronics.

The minister was speaking at the 14th Annual General Meeting of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), which was held at the Myanmar Convention Centre on March 12.

“This bazaar will raise funds for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh and North Sumatra, and some of the proceeds will also be donated to the Yangon General Hospital,” said Mr. Wyoso Prodjowaristo , the Indonesian ambassador in Myanmar.
