THE Yangon Zoological Gardens is celebrating the birth of its first Bengal Tiger cubs in more than 16 years.Three cubs were born on March 17, but one was killed by its mother, Noah Noah.Dr Kyaw Myo Hlaing, a veterinarian at the zoo, said its staff were delighted with the new arrivals.

 
OWNERS of unlicensed vehicles who failed to hand them over to the authorities by a March 31 deadline face a seven year jail term and a fine for breaching import laws, the joint secretary of the Traffic Rules Enforcement Committee, Police Lieutenant-Colonel Aung Naing, said last week.
 
THE United Nations Human Rights Commission has been urged to adopt a resolution reflecting positive developments in Myanmar during its annual session underway in Geneva.
 

THE Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Senior General Than Shwe, said the visit late last month by the Indian External Affairs Minister, Mr K. Natwar Singh, would help to sustain the momentum in bilateral interaction.

     

THE Singapore Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, arrived in Yangon on March 30 for a one-day visit during which he paid a courtesy call on the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Senior General Than Shwe.

The department issued a notification in the second week of March stating that the Himalayan, or Myanmar, crocodile newt, Tylototriton verucosus, has been added to the list of endangered species that are protected under the Protection of Wildlife and Conservation of Natural Areas Law.

The organisation will spend about $400,000 of the aid to buy 1064 tonnes of rice to help supplement the food supplies of former opium poppy farmers in the Kokang region of northern Shan State, U Zin Aung Swe said.

U Kyaw Myint said that since March 20, the shops had opened at Htilin, Seikphyu, Saw, Yezago, Myaing and Pauk in Magwe Division and at Salingyi, Yinmabin, Pa-le in Sagaing Division. Another shop would open at Gangaw in Magwe Division this month.

One of the most outstanding feats of engineering in the Asian theatre during the war, the Ledo Road was built to provide supplies from India to Chinese Nationalist forces fighting the Japanese.Mr Hauldren, a sergeant with a Ledo-based supply convoy, said his worst moments were ambushes by Japanese troops.

 

In the past year the cost of shipping a container from Yangon to Singapore has increased from $450 to $750, while shipping from Yangon to Mumbai via Singapore has gone up from $750 to $1300. U Freddy, the managing director of Myanmar International Moving Service Company Limited, said more containers should be available at Yangon’s ports.

COMMODITY prices last week remained relatively unchanged, with only a slight increase in the prices of some pulses and beans, onions and garlic, said industry sources at the Bayintnaung Complex, the biggest commodity wholesale market in Myanmar.

MYANMAR’S well-known photographer, Zaw Min Yu, is delighted that his work will be exhibited at the World Health Day celebrations organised by the World Health Organisation at the Dusit Inya Lake hotel on April 7.About 50 black and white photos taken by Zaw Min Yu on the theme of “Make every mother and child count” will be on show.
