PREPARATIONS were nearing completion throughout the country last week for celebrations marking Thingyan, the traditional new year.In cities, towns and villages, the finishing touches were being put to the pandals which will be a focus of the celebrations.

 
CULTURAL troupes from Myanmar and the five other members of the Greater Mekong Sub-region will feature in a special Thingyan traditional new year program in Mandalay being sponsored by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
 
The Cambodian Prime Minister, Mr Hun Sen, would strongly reiterate Phnom Penh’s support during talks on April 8 with his visiting Myanmar counterpart, Lieutenant-General Soe Win, said the embassy’s second secretary, Mr Neang Samrith Komar.
 

THE City Mayor’s pandal will host an expanded program of dance troupe competitions during this year’s Thingyan water festival, from April 13 to 16, said an official from the Yangon City Development Committee.

     

THE number of Myanmar undertaking pilgrimages to Buddhist holy sites in India and Nepal has increased in recent years, said a Yangon travel agency which specialises in arranging the trips.

ABOUT 200,000 books and other publications valued at K20 million have been donated by students at Basic Education High Schools in Yangon for distribution to 800 community learning centres throughout the country, a senior education official said last week.

Dr Moe Moe Thwe, the deputy director of the ministry’s ASEAN-World Intellectual Property Organisation section, said the final revised drafts were completed last month and the intellectual property rights laws would be enacted by next January 1.

The workshop was attended by officials from the Information Ministry, the MMPE, the association and representatives from three industry groups - directors, producers and scriptwriters.

It was organised by the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society, the British-based Whales and Dolphin Conservation Society, and the World Conservation Union, whose main office is located in Switzerland.

 

THE government has set a target of 12.6 per cent for economic growth during the financial year that began on April 1, up slightly from the average annual pace of 12.4 per cent in the past four years, according to a report published last week.

So, this year, the second capital’s New Year water festival will be extraordinary with a lot of entertainment programs, featuring some particularly strong shows and many music bands, singers, actors and celebrities.
