THE medical superintendent of the Yangon General Hospital, Dr Daw Nu Nu Thar, has expressed appreciation to those who helped saved injured victims of the terrorist bombings on May 7.

State media reported on May 8 that 11 people were killed and 162 injured in the mid-afternoon blasts, which occurred minutes apart at the Dagon and Junction 8 shopping centres and the Yangon Trade Centre, which was hosting a Thai trade fair.

 
THE Foreign Minister, U Nyan Win, warned against outside interference in Myanmar’s democratic transition process during a briefing at the annual meeting of foreign ministers from the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) dialogue grouping in Kyoto earlier this month.
 
THE International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has allocated more than US$12 million to Myanmar as part of a massive aid program to assist countries affected by the December 26 tsunami.
 

THE Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems focused on improving navigation channels in the Ayeyarwaddy River during its 2004-2005 work season which ended on May 15, a senior official said last week.

     

The K1 billion project, on which work began last September, is also the first Myanmar-owned resort in the archipelago. The five partners in the project are A1 Construction, Tour Mandalay Co., Ltd., the Panorama Hotel in downtown Yangon, the Kawthaung Motel and the Bagan Sagawa Palace (Power) Hotel.

Brigadier-General Pyi Sone was speaking at the Ministry of Science and Technology at the opening ceremony for a series of training courses held to promote understanding of the patent law provisions of intellectual property legislation to be introduced by 2006.

KINDERGARTENS provided the basic foundation for education, the Minister of Education, U Than Aung, told the opening ceremony of a training course held at the Myanmar Education Research Department on Pyay Road, Yangon last month.

 
 

Dr Sai Sam Htun, the chairman and managing director of Loi Hein Co., Ltd, which began producing Alpine brand drinking water in 2002, said sales have more than doubled compared with the same period last year.
“From February to April last year, we sold only three million (one-litre) bottles of water, but during the same period this year we sold seven million bottles,” he said.

“I introduced the readymade school uniforms (for girls) because I sympathise with parents who have to spend not only money but a lot of time finding outfits for their children,” said Daw Myat San Win, a director of the company.

Myanmar has advanced 11 positions in International Tennis Federation rankings, the ITF said last week.

Myanmar is now ranked at 117, up from 128 before the five-day Davis Cup tournament that ended in Yangon on May 1.
