THE government has accused a super-power nation of providing training and financial support to the rebel groups blamed for the deadly bomb attacks in Yangon on May 7.

The Information Minister, Brigadier-General Kyaw Hsan, told a news conference on May 15 that the financial and logistical support was provided “by a world famous organisation of a certain big nation.”

 
THE penalty for breaching a ban on using vehicle horns in Yangon has been increased by K10,000 to K21,500, the Commander of the Yangon Division Wireless and Traffic Police Force said last week.Police Lieutenant-Colonel Aung Naing said that while the ban had been overwhelmingly successful, it was still being breached.
 
The planned meeting between the Bangladesh Energy Minister, Mr A.K.M. Mosharraf Hossain, and his Indian counterpart, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, would take place in Dhaka, the Indian Express newspaper reported on May 17.It would be held after Bangladesh decides on the conditions under which it will allow the pipeline to pass through its territory, the newspaper said.
 

The draft agreement was signed at a meeting in Beijing on May 11 attended by officials from the six GMS members, which apart from Myanmar are Cambodia, China’s Yunnan province, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.The three-member Myanmar delegation to the meeting was led by U Thein Aung, the deputy director general of Myanma Radio and Television under the Ministry of Information.

     

Entries for the contest were taken during the four-day Myanmar Traditional Martial Arts Exhibition and Bando Competition, held in late March at the National Indoor Stadium (1), Thuwanna, in Thingangyun township. It was the third such event held since Myanmar gained independence in 1948.

The Deputy Minister of Hotels and Tourism, Brigadier-General Aye Myint Kyu and senior ministry officials met the representatives of more than 80 Yangon hotels on May 9 to discuss the security measures.

The project was initiated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific and the Greater Mekong Sub-region Business Forum in January in collaboration with business organisations in the six GMS countries.

 
 

THE Ministry of Energy is planning to open three more compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations in Yangon late this month, said a senior official from Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise under the ministry.

THE government last week reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations on the use of foreign currency in Myanmar after seizing US$90,000 carried illegally by a traveller in Yangon in early May.
