Police keep watch on new drug
Xanac spreading among teenagers
Narcotics police are keeping a close watch on xanac , a drug with similar
effects as amphetamines, which is spreading among teenagers frequenting
Pol Lt-Gen Komkrij instead of amphetamine and ecstasy because it is cheaper
has similar effects.
The use of xanac by teenagers was detected several months ago by nightspot
The drug costs 10-15 baht each against amphetamine's 100-150 baht a tablet
while ecstasy can cost as much as 1,200 baht a tablet.
Pol Lt-Gen Komkrij users feel as if they're "going to heaven". It can also
expose youngsters to other problems, including sex among drug users.
To prevent the problem, the commissioner said he has assigned narcotics
policemen to patrol nightspots in popular areas such as Si Yaek Kok Wua,
Suthisarn , Silom and Ratchadapisek every night.
More information about the drug was also being gathered, he said.

The NSB police will contact schools in Bangkok to warn them about the drug.

But he said police lacked full authority to inspect drugstores to ascertain
whether they have a licence to sell the drug, adding that only the FDA has
Three months ago, FDA officials arrested a Pakistani man with about 30,000
xanac pills in Soi Nana, off Sukhumvit Road.
Viroj Sumyai , director of the Narcotics Control Division of the Ministry of
Public Health, said the man had smuggled the drug into Thailand for sale.

He warned that the drug can have a fatal effect if taken with alcoholic drinks
as it can block breathing.
Mr Viroj said such cases were reported in foreign countries but none in
Thailand so far.
Dealers who sell the drug without an approval from the FDA will face up to
years' jail and/or up to 20,000 baht fine.
