Definitions of Characters, Character States and Related Terms Used in the OpenKey Project | |
The characters and character state terms listed here correspond to elements in the OpenKey project plant
description
XML
schema, ver.
2.20. The schema is viewable in conceptual form at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/openkey/schema/Plant_Description_Table2.20.html
Definitions of character states are given in the order in which they appear in the conceptual schema, with the exception that groups
of character states that apply to several characters are listed together near the end of the document. Definitions of characters and
additional terms contained within definitions are given at the end of the document. Characters in the schema with no character states
requiring definition are omitted from the main part of the document.
The definitions given here, while mostly reflecting general usage in botanical literature, are sometimes more narrow than the possible
range of meanings for given terms. The intention has been to create definitions that permit making distinctions useful for plant
identification in the field, rather than to produce a more broadly applicable botanical glossary.
Alan S. Weakley and Peter S. White, both of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Kenneth R. Robertson of the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, contributed to this document.
