Instructional Activities

This course uses a lecture/discussion format and includes recommended readings, laboratory dissections, demonstrations, computer simulations, and human experiments. Students are assumed to have reviewed the appropriate material before lecture and lab, and are encouraged to actively contribute to discussions and the experimental work. A course website is maintained at http://courses.durhamtech.org/~magida/ where you will handouts, lecture outlines, and useful links and learning tools. An official course description and outline can be found at durhamtech.edu.

Grading Policy

Grading is performed according to the established policies of the College using a "ten point scale" (91 — 100 = A, etc). A total of 355 points (71% of 500 total points) is required for a C. Extra credit points can not raise a failing grade to a passing grade.Evaluation consists of:

Item

% of Total Grade

Total Points

Lecture Exams (4 @ 100 pts)

80%

400

Lab (Quizzes = 50 pts; Attendance = 50 pts)

20%

100

Examinations are based only on the lecture material (but active use of the text and website is strongly encouraged). An exam or quiz missed because of a documented illness or family death may be made up, but only with prior approval from the instructor. Only one makeup is allowed per semester. Make-up exams must be taken during office hours by prior appointment. Lab absences subtract 5 points from the lab total.

Attendance and Conduct

Students may withdraw with a grade of W until the 60% point (3/24). Failure to process a withdrawal form through Registration in White Bldg will result in a grade of "F. Further, the College’s policy and procedure on Academic Honesty will be strictly enforced. Late arrival (>10 min) to lab or early departure are treated as an absence. See http://www.durhamtech.org/html/prospective/academicinfo.htm for details about academic issues
