Thanks so much to all of you who responded to my distress call about
the hummingbird. To my surprise, she did disappear and then come back
three times before dark yesterday. Most of the time, she just
perched with upturned bill making no attempt to feed but exhibiting
that constant throat pumping and stayed at least 20 minutes each time,
ignoring the other hummers, who soon stopping "bombing" her and went
to the other feeder. I think the 2 times she was hanging upside down
happened in response to attack. I saw this once: she was perched
quietly with one wing hooked over the perch and just pivoted down and
displayed at an attacking male who flew off and she remained upside
down, both feet grabbing the perch. At bedtime she was no where to
be seen.
I had a very helpful chat with hummer expert Bob Sargent who
agrees with me that the bird was in distress. I have not seen her
today.
Thanks again.
