Stilt Sandpipers-Topsail

Tracy and I stopped briefly at the dredge spoil island under the north
Topsail Island bridge on Sunday. Our hope was to see Stilt Sandpipers and
we were quickly rewarded with aprox. 6 birds feeding in the shallow
freshwater impoundment. All of the individuals were adults molting to
winter plumage. Also present were Short-billed Dowitcher, Western
Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, and the largest
group of Solitary Sandpipers I've seen, aprox. 25 birds. Water levels were
good, one area had shallow water about 3 inches deep, and another area had
deeper water. A series of storms came through late in the day and should
have provided a little bit more water. If anyone needs directions please
drop me a line.
