Caspian Tern etc. at Lake Wheeler

The west (shallow) end of Lake Wheeler had a couple of locally uncommon
birds this morning. Present were an adult Caspian Tern preening in a few
inches of water, an immature Little Blue Heron, a basic plumaged dowitcher
(probably short-billed), a Great Egret, and a variety of small shorebirds
and peeps. The low water level has exposed part of what may be an old
roadbed, and most of the shorebirds were in this area. The area can be
scoped from a small peninsula of land near the Penny Road causeway. A
scope is needed as the birds are some distance away.

Around the house we are starting so see some very strange looking
hummingbirds! The molt is in full swing and we have streaked hummers,
splotched hummers, and one hummer with no tail! The tail-less bird seems
to be getting along well and has new pin feathers coming in so we think it
will be fine. The immature males are starting to get red on their throats
and we have birds with a variety of splotches and streaks including one
with the left side of the throat red and the white side white. Pretty
strange. Our third clutch of bluebirds is doing well. 3 eggs were laid
and we curretnly have 3 2-week old chicks.

Have a great week,
