I decided to take a walk down New Hope Creek from the 751 bridge (Count
Circle Area 22S). The mudflats lived up to their potential by producing a
locally rare shore bird - a Red-necked (or Northern) Phalarope. I will
write up details of this sighting shortly. Seeing the bird (if it hangs
around) may prove somewhat problematic. From the 751 bridge, one must
walk up New Hope Creek to within several hundred yards of the powerline
cut. Across from the two islets on the western side (the Count Circle
Area 24N side) of New Hope Creek where the creek channel is surrounded by
mudflats and the shore birds seem to be concentrating, there is a large
pool near the creek bed. The phalarope seemed rather persistent in
swimming in this particular pool as it let me approach to within 20 feet or
so and returned to the pool when flushed. Call me if you want further
details.
