In today's Parade Magazine (15 August 1999) there's a great review of Scott
Weidensaul's new book, "Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with
Migratory Birds." While researching the book, Scott covered 70,000 miles by
car, plane, boat and foot over six years--but "less than a single sandpiper
covers in a brief lifetime."
I haven't seen a copy yet, but if it's true to form for Scott, it will be
well worth reading and owning. (I'm personally itching to see what he says
about hummingbirds.) I'm sure since he lives near Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
in Pennsylvania he has a much better feel for migration than many casual
observers.
While you're getting a book for yourself, why not order a copy for your
local high school library and turn on some teenagers to the joy of birds?
The volume is $26 and published by North Point Press--Farrar, Straus, and
Giroux.
NOTE: This is an unsolicited testimonial and I have nothing to gain or lose
by posting it. :-)
Happy Birding . . .and Reading!
