My wife wanted to take our kids on a train ride in Spencer, NC (near
Salisbury) and I thought it would be a perfect chance to drop by to see the
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers near Monroe, so we did that yesterday (6/8). We
got there at 4:00. I didn't see anything at first except House Finches and
Redwings, but then the female Scissortail appeared on a wire some distance
off and flew to the tower above my head. She sat at the nest for a while
until the male came by, and then she flew off while he sat there for a long
time. I heard what sounded like babies a number of times. Finally the
female came back and the male sat on a nearby bar before taking off. It was
a nice way to add a species to my NC list, and it brought back memories of
the seven years I lived in Texas. (Thanks, Anne Olsen!) I also heard a
Grasshopper Sparrow and Field Sparrows in the adjacent fields but didn't see
them.
