At 8:15 this morning I drove past a pair of Mute Swans (yes, orange bills)
waddling along in short grass on the east side of Old Highway 86 northwest
of Carrboro. The exact spot was about one-quarter mile north of Eubanks Rd.
and a few yards north of the Duke Forest gate (for Bald Mtn.) that is
opposite a long driveway. A homeowner on the east side of the road keeps the
land under the powerline mowed short and lawnlike right up to the woods --
that's where the swans were. There are ponds in the area but none that I
know of within a few hundred yards. No clue if these birds belong to
someone. Pretty bizarre.
