Lots of Saw-whets banded in Virgina

Hi Carolinabirders,

Glancing around the listservs while finishing off dessert... Virginia
listserv mentions two Saw-whet Owl banding operations. One in the
Lynchburg area, western Piedmont, reports having banded 11 birds on the
night of November 4 alone! The other, on the Eastern Shore of the
Chesapeake, has banded 34 birds since October 26, including one recap that
had been banded last year. The coastal operation also captured a
Long-eared Owl on November 2! Hard to believe such numbers of Saw-whets
are passing through the state north of us, and yet we see virtually none
of them down here in the winter... Secretive little buggers!

Also recently found out that Paul Guris, whom many of us know from
assorted pelagic trips, has started his own pelagic trip company. He says
he has no plans to operate in NC waters at the moment, but anyone who's
planning to be in New Jersey or Delaware might want to check his
schedule... See

And that kingbird from Southport is being discussed on ID-Frontiers, with
consensus appearing to be that it's a Gray:

Good birding,
