NC Audubon meeting in Raleigh; web notes

Hi Carolinabirders,

Henry Armistead - who, I've been corrected, lives in Philadelphia; he
justs *birds* (and e-mails) in Virginia - posted another two-part birding
epic to the Virginia list featuring northeastern North Carolina from
Mattamuskeet (was anybody NOT there over the weekend?) and Bodie/Pea
Islands up to the CBBT. The one sightings that jumps out of his report is
a fly-by hummingbird over route 12 in Southern Shores; maybe one of Joan
Kutulas' Ruby-throats? Can't be THAT many hummers there at this time of
year, can there?

Elsewhere on the listserv archives tonight: Athens, GA apparently has an
Allen's Hummingbird, and another Calliope as well; both second-year males,
both banded, visiting the same feeder! Both banded, so the Allen's ID is
confirmed. In Delaware, much less confirmed, a yellow-billed female
Goldeneye that some birders think might be a Barrow's. A bit further away
(I think), in Alabama, a possible first state record of Vaux's Swift, and
an unconfirmed Lesser Goldfinch as well! And in Florida, an unverified
report of a Bewick's Wren; hope a few of these wild reports get re-found
and confirmed.... Even further away, in Michigan, a Eurasian Goldfinch;
this one's identification is not in question, but as usual for this
species, the origin is very much questioned (i.e. it could be an escaped
cage bird).

Back here in the Triangle, the "Feather Vane" - newsletter of New Hope
Audubon - in its February issues mentions that Audubon North Carolina will
be having its annual meeting in Raleigh March 28-29, with talks (headlined
by one on the environmental legacy of Roger Tory Peterson) at the NC
Museum of Natural Sciences. ANC's own newsletter, on-line at
http://www.ncaudubon.org/NewslFW02.pdf
lists the fields trips, including Falls Lake, Greenview Pond, Anderson
Point, the NCSU Dairy Ponds, Lake Wheeler, Yates Millpond, the Buckeye
Trail, Umstead SP, and Hemlock Bluffs.

Good birding,

Josh
