Birdwalk

Here at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville we are
just beginning the planning of an extensive bird walk(s) in and around our
40 acre campus. Deerfield has recently completed some 172 apartments in two
five story buildings, 70 freestanding cottages, assisted living and skilled
nursing facilities.
Deerfield is bounded on the east by heavily traveled Route 25 to
Hendersonville, to the north by the Mountains to the Sea Trail and the Blue
Ridge Parkway, to the west by hundreds of acres of heavily forested Biltmore
Farms property, and to the south by more Biltmore Farms forest and potential
commercial property. A perimeter walk around the Deerfield property is about
three miles, takes maybe an hour and you will pass over concrete sidewalks,
macadam roads, serious walking trails, and deep woods. There are many
possibilities to shorten or lengthen your walk. The place is loaded with
birds and potential bird habitat.
We think the properly developed walk would encourage residents to get
out and walk, give them year round enjoyment, get them involved in an
activity that could be far reaching, get them involved with young folks
(whom we hope would volunteer in many areas of the project) and equally
important, help the birds, too.
We'd like to do this thing right and are seeking as much information
(and maybe help) as possible. We'd love to have comments from far and wide.
Sincerely,

Irv Deibert
