On Sunday afternoon, Chris Eley and I went to the New Hope Creek mudflats
from NC 751 to try to relocate some of Ricky's good birds of the morning.
Though we literally walked in his footsteps, we couldn't find a one -- and
total numbers of shorebirds were less than half what Ricky saw. Even the
dowitchers were all gone. Perhaps they headed over to the Morgan Creek
mudflats for the afternoon. If you're going to try the east side of the
New Hope Creek mudflats (751 access), go in the morning if you can -- the
lighting is much better.
I did a quick count of the white egrets at New Hope Creek and the 751
bridge -- 101 Great Egrets and 1 Snowy. There were a few land birds
flocking with the chickadees -- we had 4 B&w Warblers, a nice flock of
Blue Grosbeaks, N. Parula, Y-t Warbler, Y-t Vireo, a whole bunch of
Gnatcatchers, etc.
Reminder: the Chapel Hill Bird Club is having a field trip to the Morgan
Creek mudflats this Saturday morning. For details and a map, see
