Lancaster Co., SC 28 AUG 1999 & Sumter Co., SC 29 AUG 1999

Birds of note in Lancaster Co., SC on Saturday were...
5 Snowy Egrets
230+ Cattle Egrets
1 adult Bald Eagle
1 Cooper's Hawk
3 Spotted Sandpipers
6 Least Sandpipers
1 Chestnut-sided Warbler

Today, 29 AUG 1999, in Sumter Co. I had a good assortment of shorebirds
in a drawn-down farm pond off US 378. One Semipalmated Plover, 10+
Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 6 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 6 Least
Sandpipers, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, and 2 Short-billed Dowitchers. There
were many, many, many more shorebirds in the back of this huge pond. I
asked for, and received, permission from the farmer's wife to walk back
there to get a closer look, but Mr. Green Jeans drove out after me and told
me my spotting scope made him nervous, and said I had to return to the
paved road if I was going to do anymore bird-watchin'. He actually told me
my looking at his cows like that made him nervous. There were some nice
looking herefords out there, but nothing I really had an interest in. Oh
well. The above birds were what I was able to see before he asked me to
leave.
Other migrants of note were 7 Forster's Tern, two of which were flying
over the pond. The other 5 Forster's were out over Lake Marion as seen
from Pack's Landing. Also had 2 Wood Storks flying over the lake, and
another Wood Stork at the marsh along a county road which crosses the
Pocataligo River. One adult Bald eagle was seen over Lake Marion as well.
Saw at least 1 Bank Swallow. The cloudy, overcast skies were not very
conducive to discerning as to species the scores of swallows I saw today.
Lastly, 2 Northern Waterthrushes and 4 Bobolinks.
