Good birds

Carolyn Bush and I birded the Ft. Fisher area yesterday, Friday, with the
following highlights:

On the ferry ride from Southport 2 big birds flying just over the water
with white on rumps had us thinking pelagic, but they were Harriers. Still
kind of interesting flying so low over the water.

A Virginia rail both seen and heard in vegetation at the foot of the jetty.

8 Oystercatchers on jetty, with spotted SP and usual small sps.

A Lark sparrow on ground was watched for several minutes. This was behind
the little battery hill. C. yellowthroat there also.

Very small flocks of Prairie warblers being thwarted by the gusting wind
from crossing the mouth of the Cape Fear River.

A White winged dove seen well as it flew across the parking lot at the
Aquarium. The feeders were still down and we beat the bushes but saw no
other interesting birds there.

Under the very mosquitoey oaks behind the Fort a few "normal" warblers,
namely more Prairies, a Yellow-throated and a Black and white.

Terns seen were Forster's, Sandwich, and Royal.

Today we went to the East End of Ocean Isle Beach to look for neat things
under and on the pilings and were surprised to discover the pilings have all
been removed. We did see a Piping plover in a tidal pool.

Checking Ocean Isle Sewerage ponds this past couple of weeks have seen
dwindling numbers til just 1 Solitary, 2 or 3 Spotteds, and a few Leasts.
There is a flock of Blue winged teal of about 30. Only saw a few Black
terns a couple of days there which is unusual.

West End of Sunset last Sunday still had a Reddish egret , 1 Marbled godwit,
whimbrel and lots of expected terns including Least and Black and fewer but
still a good number of Wilson plovers.

Good luck to all experiencing the brunt of Dennis's continued presence.
We're just getting nice gusts here.
