Baird's Sandpiper, Saluda Co, SC

Hi,

Observed two Baird's Sandpipers today on a grass-covered sandbar, on the
eastern side of highway 385 where it crosses the Saluda River between Saluda
County and Newberry County at Kempson's Ferry Bridge. Two Killdeer were the
only other shorebirds present. The Baird's were watched for about a half
hour in good light with 20X and 50X scope, during which time they walked and
ran through the grass, occasionally even hopping up onto driftwood logs, and
sometimes resting and preening, almost concealed in little hollow. They
avoided the muddy water's edge of the sandbar and stuck to the grass. I
don't know of any other record of this species for Saluda County.
