Friends, the Carolina Bird Club will proceed with its fall meeting this
coming weekend in Charleston.
Some field trips may be altered or canceled, but in general we expect to be
able to get access to good birding areas. We will know of the changes only
later in the week, too late to get the word out before you arrive in
Charleston.
Our hearts go out to the many club members, and thousands of others,
suffering the effects of the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd. If canceling
our meeting would help them in any way, we would do so.
We know that good friends will be unable to join us because they are still
coping with storm and flood damage. Knowing of the great needs in both
states, we will collect donations (checks made to the Red Cross are
preferable) at the meeting and forward them to the Red Cross.
Members worried about blocked highways can call the N.C. Department of
Transportation customer service office, 1-877-368-4968; or check the S.C.
DOT Web site (www.dot.state.sc.us). As of Sunday night, I-95 was blocked
north of I-40, and I-40 east, of I-95 (meaning folks in the Triangle area
could head to Charleston without difficulty). SC highway closures were few
and did not appear to me to affect access to Charleston.
I agonized over this decision. What tilted the balance for me was: 1/
conditions in Charleston are satisfactory for the meeting to proceed; 2/
many people in areas largely unaffected by the storm have been looking
forward to the meeting; and 3/ many people have worked hard to organize the
meeting.
We will go ahead, but the pleasures of this meeting will be diminished
because we know difficulties continue in areas that Floyd struck hard.
