Ducks and Duck Stamps

Hi again,

Many thanks to the several people who supported me off the listserv. This
listserv is about birds and birdwatchers, not hunting, and I regret ever
bringing the subject up. Trust me, I will not make that mistake again. I
apologize to the listserv for having to read the exchange, including my
own comments. Right or wrong, I should not have posted them here.

Back to the birds:

These birds are all pretty much captives. I believe they have had their
wings clipped; they are all fairly well domesticated. This includes the
Hooded Merganser, although last year a carolinabirder (Dan Lebbin I
think) reported a second Hoodie here, which must have been a wild
transient. The same pond hosts a couple of Ruddy Shelducks and a female
Common Goldeneye, and maybe a few other exotic waterfowl, also domestics.
Other than Dan's second Hoodie, the only "wild" waterfowl (i.e. capable
of flight) I have ever seen in the Sarah Duke Garden ponds are Mallards.

In that area, I'm not entirely sure. I have always purchased them at
National Wildlife Refuges, mostly either back home in Massachusetts at
Parker River NWR or down in Florida at Loxahatchee or "Ding" Darling.
Short of going to Mattamuskeet, Pee Dee, or Pea Island, all I can suggest
is asking at your local outdoor/sporting goods store. If Hillsborough
doesn't have such a store, I drove by one in downtown Creedmoor today...

Good luck, and good birding,

Josh
