RE: Re: U.S. plans to net Canadian falcons - news story

The whole idea sounds pretty weird to me. First of all, why would you want
to catch Peregrines in the first place. If there is a need for falconers
Peregrines than that's their problem. It sounds a bit like the old fashioned
attitude, that is being put out in the context of cage birds. As I
understand the trafficking of wild cage-birds in Europe is illegal for most
species. Only exeptions are some very common parakeets and finches.
Certainly Peregrines aren't all that common.
And if the US government was silly enough to grant permission to catch wild
Peregrines, why not take excess eggs from nests and put those in incubators?
Surely freshly hatched Peregrines would easier adjust to humans. Ok, adult
Peregrines already know how to hunt, but can you teach them to scare birds
without actually killing?
Finally I don't like the approach "I don't care what you do with your
Peregrines, as long as you don't touch ours". Don't think of the birds in
your area as *your* birds. That's the first lesson anybody should learn:
wild birds don't have a nationality, and can not be owned by a individual,
group or country. The protest should therefore not be focused on making sure
*canadian* Peregrines are left alone, but on leaving *ALL* Peregrines alone.

Jan-Joost
