I took a swing by the usual spots for ducks in southern Wake county
yesterday morning.
NCSU Dairy Pond- 1 Bufflehead, 2 Northern Shovelers, 3 Ring Necks
1010 Pond- 21 Ring Necks, 7 American Wigeon
West Lake Pond- 28 Ring Necks
Greenview Pond- major construction, no ducks
Spent a wonderful day at Ft. Fisher on Saturday, mainly enjoying the
beautiful weather but also keeping an eye out for birds. Hundreds
(thousands?) of Northern Gannets streaming south. Maybe 5 or so per minute
all day long. I thought it a little unusual that the majority of these
birds were juveniles, relatively few adults.
Had one good group of scoters (mixed Black and Surf) along with a few
smaller groups of Surf. The sound side harbored a mixed flock of several
hundred sandpipers and plovers, mainly Least and Western SP, Dunlin and
SemiP Plovers.
In response to the recent thread about a decrease in feeder visits, we have
had a marked reduction in birds latley. I figured this was probably due to
the warm temps. We usually notice a similar pattern whenever extended warm
weather occurs during the colder months. On a high note we did have a
creeper yesterday, a new yard bird!
