Robin Carter found a Northern Saw-whet Owl in Columbia, SC, early this
afternoon perched in a pine tree in Harbison State Forest. These birds
like to perch quietly during the day, and this one was in the same tree
until at least 4. So several other people, including me, were also able
to observe the bird.
Harbison State Forest is located at 5500 Broad River Road. Gates are
open 9 am - 4:30 pm. There are trail guides available at the entrance.
If you want to try to relocate this bird (which may be in a different
location tomorrow even if it is wintering here), go to Parking Lot 4.
Walk a short distance along the Firebreak Trail starting at B (towards
Y) until you reach a white handkerchief tied to a tree; this is right
next to the first large mud puddle. The bird was perched in a notch
close to the top of one of the pine trees to the left, about 50 feet in
and about 40 feet up.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please call
Robin Carter at 782-8820. He (or someone else) will probably try to
relocate the bird tomorrow.
