The very first place I ever heard (and then saw) a Red-cockaded 
Woodpecker was at the Lake Bee picnic area at Carolina Sandhills NWR. 
There are several nest trees in the open areas there that have been 
more or less active for years. (I once saw a Screech Owl and a 
red-cockaded in the same tree at that location at noon, so maybe 
that's where you should eat lunch!)

BTW, please consider the Carolina Sandhills NWR Christmas Bird Count, 
to be held this year on 2 January. Let me know if you need details.
