Lake Matamuskeet

Not much to add to the efforts of the CBC on the day before, although today
(11/21)we spotted a male and female EURASIAN WIDGEON in the canal along the
Wildlife Trail. We had one long look at a BALD EAGLE perched in a tree from
the observation deck near the end of the Wildlife Trail, and two pairs of
WOOD DUCKS in the impoundment behind the 'grated' Fishing Bridge on the
Causeway. As with the CBC group, the LESSER SCAUP was most cooperative along
the Entrance Road, providing great views. Missed the Mute Swan, and could
never catch a glimpse of the Sedge Wrens in the marshes, but they were
vocalizing.

One humorous sighting was a Great Blue Heron with a large eel completely
wrapped around his beak. The Heron appeared to have no idea how to get the
eel off of his beak without losing it. We quit watching after about 20
minutes, with the eel still intact the Heron still confused.

On the way back to Nags Head, we spotted an AMERICAN BITTERN on 264, about 3
miles before the Alligator River NWR boundary sign. The Bittern was along
the side the road, around dusk. After viewing him from afar, we were able to
drive right up to him. My wife could have opened the window and touched him.
He stayed motionless there for a long time, allowing the closest look at any
Bittern we have ever had.
