Earnest and All,
Here in the Sandhills, I have not given my Pineapple Sage any special
treatment before or after our first killing freeze. I do keep it well
mulched year round as I do all my plantings. But most imprtantly, I leave
the dead stems in place for the winter (which make good extra landing
reas/perches around my birdbath where the plants are located) and they then
come back from the roots just fine about mid-March. Somewhere I read that
this is critical to the plant overwintering although I am not sure
why--botanists out there..? Since the earth never really freezes much here
the underground portion of plant survives just fine.
