Beaver Lake afternoon

Hi folks;
As I am not going to be at the walk tomorrow, (too early) I decided to
go to BL myself this afternoon. Was greeted by a NICE Red Shouldered
Hawk at the parking lot. Upon arrival, I saw a bulldozer and a backhoe,
and was concerned that there was going to be construction there. Not so.
They are building a wetland! Hooray!
Saw a number of birds today. Here's the list. All but the vulture were
at BL.
Turkey Vulture (East Asheville)
Red Shouldered Hawk
Crows (Where there are hawks.....)
Northern Junco
Chickadee
Myrtle Warbler (have to get an old book for that one)
House finch
Cardinal
Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
Song Sparrow
White Throated Sparrow
Chickadee (maybe Black Capped?)
Hairy woodpecker (all white outer tail feathers, see Peterson's)
Buffleheads
Pied Billed Grebes
Am. Coots
Gadwalls
Carolina Wren (heard)
Goldfinch (heard)

But no Mallards? What? Went to the other end of the lake and found them
with the domestic ducks on the dam. Sluggards all.

20 species in less than an hour. Not bad, huh?
