HI ALL:
On Fri. 3 Dec. Ben Smith,Giff Beaton and myself were escorted onto South
Island to put safety lines in the trees with Eagle nest. This was so there
men could climb the trees and be tied in to the safety line at all times. We
did 5 Eagle nest on South Island. As we went on the island we saw a Golden
Eagle perched on a power pole. As we drove up it flew off but continued to
circle low over-head, making for great photo opps. After finishing with the
trees we went on a tour of the island. There were Egrets.Herons and Ducks
everywhere.
We saw well over 100 Great Blue Herons, Many Northern Harriers, and Red
Tail Hawks. We had 29 Bald Eagles for the day, 19 of them were seen in one
area at the same time perched in trees. From there we went to the ocean side
and were delighted to see a large concentration of Northern Gannets
feeding right off the shore. There were several Greater Black Gulls there as
well as 2 Shear waters of some type.
The ferry ride across the Intercostal Waterway was really something, it
took us 33 seconds to make the trip across.
This is a great Island, But you have to have permission to gain access to
it. It is just south of Georgetown SC.
