Regarding the question about chickadee nests, it is possible that the nest
dried up and literally slipped between the cracks. I had chickadees build
once in my Bluebird house (which was fine, as it was far too early in the
spring for Bluebirds to use the box) and the nest was constructed entirely
of the tops of what we always called Velvet Moss and rabbit (?) fur. By
"tops of Velvet Moss" I mean it looked as if the chickadees had trimmed the
stems off of Velvet Moss and used them. There were no roots of Velvet Moss
in the nest at all. And I assume rabbit fur because the fur was tan and
black and very fine, didn't look like any other animal's fur that I
recognized. I really wanted to get an all-around look at the nest because
it was so beautiful and so clever and so "snug-looking" in the box.
Unfortunately, it wasn't woven at all; it was simply Velvet Moss stems and
rabbit fur piled into the box and fell apart the minute I tried to remove
it from the box.
